Around Town ~ Miss Behavin

 

               Twenty-Twenty changed many things and one great thing that changed was Miss Behavin moved to the square.  County Court offices moved to a new facility and a large space opened up on the square.  Miss Behavin took over a large part while the Chamber of Commerce occupied the rest.  They are open Monday thru Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Their website is www.missbehavinss.com.  You can shop there anytime you need.

 

               Miss Behavin has been in Sulphur Springs since 2010 and is owned by Chris and Lis Childress.  They started out at the VF Outlet mall, grew an online presence and moved downtown.  It’s been a great adventure that has been made even better because of their customers and community.

 

               Community is important to Miss Behavin, you can pretty much expect their support at major local events in the city and county.  They provide support to all the county schools when requested and feel it’s important to being part of the community as a whole.

 

               When you stop by Miss Behavin you can find something for multiple people on your lists.  Even those new baby boys.  While they feature mainly girls and women clothing, their junior department is a huge hit.  With customers coming from all over the State and even out of state while visiting Sulphur Springs.  The move from the VF mall did not deter the customers who loved their store, now they just have more reasons to visit Sulphur Springs because of the new location.

 

               You can find casual dress options, along with Sunday dinner items inside. Plus, a selection of jeans and shorts to help keep your wardrobe well rounded.  Spice it up with a cute pair of shoes from their selection and top it off with a necklace or hat.  We are sure that you can find a new piece to add to your wardrobe or start new with a little makeover. 

 

               Sizes range from baby to curvy and everything in between.  Be sure to check out their social media and website for new pieces that are hitting the shelves.  Your style can expand and grow at Miss Behavin.  Their staff is friendly and inviting to each customer and they keep up with current fashion trends to make sure you do as well.  Stop in to grab your summer finds and bring your friends.

Around Town ~ Market on Main

 

            Downtown Sulphur Springs, Texas has so many great shopping options for everyone on your list or in your family.  One of the newer spots to hit up is The Market on Main.  Located at 213 Main Street, this unique shop is full of gift ideas and shopping fun.  Not only can you experience freeze dried candy, but clothing, kitchen items and so much more.  The Market on Main is home to not just one vendor but over seventeen (17) women owned stores.  They are open Tuesday thru Saturday from 10 – 6 and have plans to extend Friday and Saturday hours during the summer days.

               Not only can you shop while you visit the Market on Main, it is also home to Masterpiece Ultrasound, were you can view your baby in 4D.  The sweet baby faces can be viewed from 6 weeks to 36 weeks, with 30-32 weeks being the ideal time to view the best “chubby face” images while on the inside.

               Bring the whole family to see those baby faces and then pick out the best baby or mom gift while in the shop.  The Market on Main has something for everyone.  Recently the shop has changed hands and welcomed a new owner.  They are currently at capacity for vendors but you can always put your name on a list if you are not yet ready to take the plunge into a full shop of your own. 

               Let your creativity flow when you stop by the Market on Main and find many local, handcrafted gifts among those curated by the ladies who each create their space for the goods that they display.  Along with the small shops a local photographer hosts mini sessions on site and currently has a Spring or Easter display ready to capture images of your cute little bunnies heading into the Spring season.

               The Market on Main brings together women from all over Hopkins County who would otherwise might not be able to share their goods with the public in such a way as a physical store front. While some might have an online presence this shopping experience brings out a wider audience to their unique brand and products.

Let's Eat ~ Food Trucks Lou's Country Food

 

    When you head West on Hwy 11/Wild Cat Way in Sulphur Springs, just behind Lowe's you can find Lou's Country Food.  Lou's food truck has been operating for the last four years, while on her day's off from her first job.  When you see her window open be sure to stop by for some good home-cooked, Southern food.  Her specialty is chicken fried steak, that she hand batters, and buys locally.  She makes all her own food and loves to cook for others. Her love of cooking is what brings her to her food truck on her day's off.  In a perfect world she would cook for those around her every day.    

    Before Lou opened her food truck, she and her father had a restaurant in Como called Butch and Lou's; that she closed shortly after his passing.  Now you can find her cooking up all your country favorites in Sulphur Springs.  Her hours are not always the same since she works her food truck on her days off.  Be sure to give her a call 903-335-6334 to place your order or to see if she is open.  When she is open, she will be serving up food from 10 a.m. to 7 p. m. or 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Lou's takes cash or card when you order. 

    You can find all your home cooked favorites on Lou's menu. From sandwiches, burgers, and full meals as well as tasty sides to complement all her main choices.   A hot item are the orders of Pittsburgh hotlinks, get them while they last.  Of course, her plate of the day goes quickly as well.  A crowd favorite is Chicken fried steak, which she was out of, when we stopped by, so we ordered the next best thing, Chicken fried chicken.  

    Since burgers are always a crowd favorite, we ordered a cheeseburger with everything on it.  Boy it did not disappoint.  One more boys said it even matched In-and-Out for flavor and substance.  The cheeseburger we ordered came with everything a good burger should have, lettuce, onions, and tomatoes.  Plus mustard since everyone needs a little bit of condiments on their burger. 

    The Chicken Fried Chicken was cooked just right and battered to perfection.  The chicken was moist, and the portion size was filling.  My seventeen year old, was full by the end of his meal, now that's saying something.  His plate came with two sides and he selected fried okra and French fries.  You can even select a roll or corn bread to go with your plate.  Of course, don't forget the gravy.

    We also ordered a BLT, after all who does not love bacon.  Both kids said that was probably the best thing we ordered. The sandwich was loaded up with plenty of bacon, and just the right amount of lettuce and tomato, to complement each other well.  The bacon was nice, thick, and crispy.  The perfect sandwich for lunch or dinner.

    If you are ever in Sulphur Springs and Lou's is open, be sure to stop by and order any of the great items on her menu.  We do not feel like you will be disappointed at all by her offerings, portion sizes or taste.  Thanks, Lou, for the great food. 

    

Let's East Food Trucks ~ Rancho Las Palomas Taqueria

 

    I have passed this food truck for over a year, while taking my kids to the middle school or making a supply run to Lowe's.  The Rancho Las Palomas Taqueria is located on Wild Cat Way and the corner of 154 at 1707 S. Broadway, St.  He is open six days a week, Monday thru Saturday from 8 a. m. to 8 p. m.  Be sure to bring cash when you order in person or when you make a call-in order to 903-335-0505, otherwise you will have to hit up the ATM.

    For this visit I ordered tacos, because tacos are always a crowd favorite, and I knew each of my kids would love one so that was easy.  I picked out the same one for all of them so that I would have a good base to start with to formulate an opinion.  They loved them!  Hands down they said these tacos were some of the best they have had in town.  Authentic, with great flavor and a traditional street taco style with meat, diced onions, and cilantro.   

    I also ordered a beef torta to see how it differed from the one we used to make at Coffee off the Square.  Plus, I knew one taco would not be enough food for the 17-year-old. The torta is definitely a meal in and of its self.  A full sandwich filled with beef, lettuce, onions and guacamole.  The boys thought it was pretty tasty and would surely order again. "The torta was amazing, it had great flavor," said the 17-year-old.

    Finally, I picked up a quesadilla.  The quesadilla is filled with cheese and beef and also a full meal.  The crispy outside tortilla gave the quesadilla plenty of texture.  White the beef was full of flavor and nice and tender in the quesadilla.  The sauces that came with the meal were perfect and not to spicy, so as not to diminish the flavor of the food.  The 12-year-old said, "this was one of the best quesadillas I have ever had."

    Needless to say, everyone enjoyed the food from the Taqueria truck, and we will plan to go back again. Maybe on our next run to Lowe's.  We hope that you will stop by and explore their menu and find your next favorite meal from the Rancho Las Palomas Taqueria.

Let's Eat Food Trucks ~ Jen's Kitchen

 

    Jen and her husband recently moved to North East Texas from Washington State and found that they really enjoyed the city and environment in Sulphur Springs, but the variety of ethnic foods to be lacking.  She decided to put her family history to work and created the Jen's Kitchen food truck to bring a little bit of Korean food to East Texas.  

    Jen adapted her family recipes that her mother used in her career and gave them her own American appeal, a little sweeter and not quite as spicy.  You can find Jen's Kitchen parked at the Rail Yard and with summer hours from 10 am - 9 pm Monday thru Saturday.  The meals purchased here are just like what they would eat at home everyday, so you can add some variety to your dining options in a quick and easy fashion. 

    We enjoyed a sampling of their menu today and I brough along two of my favorite food testers to let me know which dish was their favorite.  Hands down they both enjoyed the Teriyaki Chicken.  They said the to chicken was cooked perfectly and the flavor tasted amazing.  "The flavors went Kaboom in my mouth," stated Quintten.

    Their second choice is the Beef Bulgigi. Each dish came with fresh steamed rice and a beef patty that both boys really enjoyed.  The coleslaw had great flavor as well and over all they enjoyed their meal from Jen's Kitchen. 

   

    The homemade kimchi was fantastic too.  The spice hits just right and is a great way to finish off your meal.  I'm not sure if they gave us some dessert because Quintten was starving or if that is something they do on the regular, but a little marshmallow cookie was found in our bag and everyone enjoyed trying something different.  

    We can't wait to head back to the Rail Yard to try something new.  I know they have one more spot open if you know of a food truck looking to park and establish a following.  Until then head on over there and enjoy from fresh, homemade Korean food, that will not disappoint.  

Let's Eat Food Trucks ~ Shave Shop

    You may have seen Clay & Kendall Hansford around Sulphur Springs or other local cities with their mobile shaved iced truck at an event or two since they opened. Now you can enjoy their shaved iced without the hunt.  With two Shave Shop trucks they are ready and able to attend special events, and park at their new spot at The Rail Yard.  The flexibility of having two trucks allows them to serve their customers in more ways than one.  

    With the addition of the a second truck Clay and Kendall are still able to participate in school fundraisers, where they give back to the school that books their truck as well as company parties, and events.  They hope that their spot at the Rail Yard, will give them additional visibility during the summer months while schools are no longer in session. 

    When they started with the school fundraisers, the Shave Shop found that they have to abide by the low calorie snack rule and changed all the syrups to fit the needs of the new snack guidelines.  The best part about them attending a school event is that they give back 30% of their profits back to school.  Who would not want to host the Shave Shop at their next big school event.  

   If you are not a school don't worry the Shave Shop has you covered, for all your corporate events and parties.  Treat your employees to a cold summer treat or wow your guests for your next party by having the Shave Shop attend.

    While it might seem like all fun and games, running a mobile shaved ice business it does take a lot of work and planning to adapt to customer needs and find the correct supplies.  They drive once a week to Keller to stock up on ice to fill up the deep freeze and be ready for all those events and parties.  They have even discovered on their travels new flavors to share with their customers, that will be coming out soon.  

    

    Menu options will change and adapt based on location and event.  Be on the look out for new cream based flavors coming soon.  In the mean time stop by their spot at the Rail Yard to enjoy some fresh shaved ice.  I had the new cold brew coffee shaved ice and let me tell you, I'll be back to order that one again.  It definitely hit the spot and I know the kids will want to visit soon.  

Let's Eat ~ Deep Routes

 

    We want to “inspire our community to stay connected,” is the mission statement of Deep Routes coffee where we went this month to visit with owner Kendra Wallace and of course have a great cappuccino.  Deep Routes is located at 215 Shannon Road East, in the old dry cleaner building.  Their hours are from 7 a. m.  to 6 p. m. and is open six days a week, closed on Sunday. 

Deep Routes is a great space that is more than just a coffee shop.  One side is coffee and conversation while the other side, Shop the Springs, is a local vendor market. Not only can you find and enjoy a great coffee you can find gifts and items for your home.

               Deep Routes has the standard offering for coffee options from a local Texas roaster out of Arlington.  Along with coffee, patrons can pick up Laura’s Cheesecakes, that are made in Mount Pleasant.  Kolache’s made in Royce City as well as breakfast burritos made by Slaughter’s BBQ.  Their goal is to involve the community on multiple levels from supporting small businesses to building community relationships within their coffee home.

               Their pastry options have revolved a little but they always have something tasty to pick up and enjoy with your coffee.  The Kolache’s are amazing and so is the cheese cake.  For a quick breakfast options you can’t hardly beat a Slaughter’s brisket taco and a fantastic cup of coffee.  Head on through their drive thru on your way to work and you won’t be disappointed. 

               They have multiple cozy spots to sit, have conversation or read a book.  There are tables for coffee shop meetings, as well as just a simple workspace for those who live the coffee shop vibe.  Deep Routes is a great place to meet up and “have meaningful conversations,” with those around you in your community or meet someone new.

               Not only will they be serving up great coffee Deep Routes is also hosting concerts this April and book singings by local authors.  Tune into their Facebook page for the most up to date information about what and who will be playing at their spot. 

               We are so excited to see Deep Routes and Shop the Springs come to Sulphur Springs.  We love to support local businesses, and their model is perfect for doing so in one spot.  No matter if you are on your way to work, headed out of town or just want to sit and chat Deep Routes is the perfect place to make that happen.  We hope to see you there the next time you are at The Oaks bed and breakfast.

Let's Eat Food Truck ~ Sherry's Shack

 

    We visited with Sherry over at Sherry's Shack for our Let's Eat food truck series for February.  You may remember Sherry from the Potato House previously located in Downtown Sulphur Springs.  She decided she wanted to be able to better serve her customers in a mobile environment and opened up her food truck.  

    Sherry's Shack is located just North of the hospital at 1416 Church Street, in Sulphur Springs.  You can call, 903-951-3105, ahead your order and she will have it ready for pick up or she will deliver it to you.  If you happen to be having an event or employee appreciation day at your business, she will come to you and cook on site.  Be sure to give her a call to find out more information.

    Sherry's Shack is best known for their "Smashem Burger" so of course we had to order that.  Cooked fresh on the flat top, and topped with your favorite condiments, your burger will be filling and tasty.  I also picked up a grilled cheese with lettuce and tomatoes, and you can't forget the fries.  I always love to get a grilled cheese with items other than just cheese, so tasty.  We also picked up some Pittsburg hotlink's, fresh from Pittsburg, so you know they will be delicious.  A dab of mustard and you are ready to enjoy your lunch.

    Sherry has a varied menu and features a myriad of favorites including baked potatoes.  Add chicken, roast or brisket to your potato and you are sure to walk away satisfied.  She even makes up a dinner plate sized tostada for those who are really hungry and looking for something a little different.  

    Sherry is open Tuesday - Friday from 10:30 a. m . - 3 p. m. and Saturday from 11 a. m. to 3 p. m.  Be sure to stop by on your next lunch break and walk away satisfied.  You can enjoy your food onsite at the picnic tables behind the food truck, take it with you or have it delivered.  

Let's Eat ~ Flip's Burgerland

 

    For this month I had to call in a favor to make sure I could be able to review Flip's Burgerland to the best of my ability and Toby totally came through for me.  As the name suggests Flip's is one of the locations downtown, located at 210 Main Street, Sulphur Springs, Texas; where you can grab a fresh cooked burger and fries. I just love the total play on words for the name of this business, IYKYK.  To be clear, burgers is not all they serve, you can have a grilled chicken sandwich as well.  

    If you happen to know, I actually do not eat meat.  When it as suggested I swing by Flip's I had to make a call to see if they could hook me up with a vegetarian option.  We worked it out and based on looks you would never know that I was not eating meat, in my opinion.  Since I didn't want to just eat fries, but they could be eaten as a meal if you only wanted some spuds. 

    I loaded my burger with grilled mushrooms and onions and everything else they top them with, including cheese.  After all what is a burger with out some sort of cheese.  Of course I also ordered French fries.  I loved how if you are dining in, your food comes out right on a piece of paper.  The fries did have a boat to help contain them, but other wise it was straight paper.  Makes clean up easier I imagine. 

    I watched them package up to go orders and he even uses the paper to hold all the fries together when sending the order out.  Great way to save on not having to wash dishes and reducing Styrofoam in the land fill. The fries and burger were hot and delicious.  You can basically take your burger and make it how you want and it will be served to you, just that way.  The mushrooms and onions were done to perfection, and added a wonderful flavor.

    Here is one of the best parts, starting Sunday after Thanksgiving they are going to be open for lunch only, Sunday - Wednesday from 11 a. m. to 3 p . m they will be open and the grill will be hot.  I'm so happy to be able to recommend another restaurant option for guests who happen to be in town on Sunday.  They will also have dinner hours Thursday - Saturday when they will be open from 11 a. m. to 8 p. m.  

    Pull up a chair and order your fresh, hot burger just the way you like it.  You won't want to miss out on Flip's Burgerland the next time you stay at the Oaks bed and breakfast while in Sulphur Springs.  

October Happenings

 

    October kicks fall into full gear here in Sulphur Springs.  There are so many great activities for the whole family to participate in that you won't want to miss out.  When you book your stay at The Oaks Bed and Breakfast, we can  help point you in the right direction for all the fun. 

       The fun starts with the Cattleman's Ribeye Round up on the Square, and the Dutch Oven Cookoff at Heritage Park.  These two food centric events are sure to please your entire appetite.  Tickets are required for the Ribeye Round up but anyone can attend the Dutch Over cook off.  

    Friday night at Main Street Theatre Enola Gay and Leah Conner take the stage for an evening of conversation.  Sit down and take a step back in history and explore the future just a little with these two amazing Hopkins County residents.

    The following weekend is Main Street Uncorked on the Square, in Sulphur Springs.  Winery's, vendors and musician's come from all over the state of Texas to participate in this event.  Buy your tickets now for a great time and wonderful wine.  

    Join the Texoma Gospel Music Association at the Roc for some gospel music of Friday and Saturday, October 7-8.  Over 40 musicians will be in town to praise and worship with visitors from all over.  The entrance is free so stop by and listen for a few minutes or stay for a couple of hours.  

    After you have had your fill of wine and Gospel music head on over the Civic Center for the Annual St. James Church Auction.  An $8 ticket gets you in the door and dinner, then explore all the amazing items up for auction that you won't want to leave behind.  They have a live and silent auction, to bid from.  This is a great event, supporting one of the local churches in the Sulphur Springs community.

    Jump on over to Backstory Brewery for a family fun event and OU Texas watch party.  Fun and games for the whole family.  NorthEast Texas Gellyball will be out there along with vendors and other food options.  Join the fun October 8th from 11-8.

    Join the Community Players at Main Street Theatre starting on Friday, October 14-23 for their presentation of The Last 5 Years.  Be sure to check out their website for show times and tickets.

    Fall Festival fun kicks off on Saturday, October 15 with the traditional Fall Festival Parade, hosted by Chads Media.  You can participate in more ways than one.  Join the parade fun with your own, fall float, or grab a side of the sidewalk with friends and family to enjoy the march through town.  The parade starts at 10 a. m. at Buford Park and finishes up at Brookshires.

    The annual Help-A-Child Benefit is happening this year on Saturday, October 15 at the Civic Center.  This great event raises funds for children throughout our county.  With a cook off, cattle show, auction and so much more, you know you are bound to have a great time. 

    As you drive around town, be sure to look for your favorite hay bale construction.  Many businesses around town have decorated hay bales in celebration of our communities continuing tradition of work in agriculture.  The creativity and design of these structures is pretty amazing to see.  Be sure to tell us which one is your favorite.

    This years 53rd Annual Hopkins County Stew is set to heat up and be dished out on Saturday, October 22 at Buford Park in Sulphur Springs.  You do not want to miss this amazing event.  There will be a vendor fair close to the stew sites and one at the local high school.  Along with an art show and contests for people of all ages and categories to enter.  Be sure to order your tickets ahead of time, so you don't miss out on this great opportunity to enjoy one of Hopkins Counties best events.

    For the first time The Black Oak is hosting an adult only Halloween Party. The Monster Bash is going to be a great time, with cocktails and food from Fulgham's food truck.  Come let loose, in costume for a great date night out, with your significate other or a group of friends.  

    Just a little North of Sulphur Springs, is Cooper Lake State park.  They have a whole host of activities to do in the fall for everyone in your house.  Be sure to check out their next event and plan to make a day of it at this great resource for family fun.  We are looking forward to seeing you this October season at The Oaks.
